5.1. Methodological overview

The learning and teaching methodology developed in the course is aimed at promoting the attainment of its objectives. In the lecture sessions the foremost contents deal with historical change and its role in the organization of territory. Practical activities, consisting of analysis of historical texts and documents, display of documentaries in addition to oral and written compositions, serve to examine practical cases where territory aspects have depended upon historical circumstances. A high level of participation will be required from all students throughout the course. Extensive material will also be available via the Moodle site of the course. This offers a variety of resources including a repository of the lecture notes used in class, a course syllabus as well as other forms of course-specific materials, including a discussion forum

Lecture sessions:  37.5 hours

Practical activities: 15 hours

5.3. Syllabus

The lecture course will address the following topics. 

  1. General aspects and bibliography.
  2. From origins to the 15th century.
  3. The emergence of modern European States in the 16th century.
  4. Crisis, mercantilism, and birth of modern thought in the 17th century.
  5. Enlightenment, Enlighted despotism, and crisis of the Ancient Regime.
  6. The bourgeois revolutions and the coming of liberalism.
  7. Consolidation and consequences of liberalism, 1848-1879.
  8. The heyday of capitalism: the Great depression and the imperialism, 1870-1914.
  9. The short 20th century: from the Great War to the Cold War, 1914-1971.
  10. The current period, 1989-2013.

5.4. Course planning and calendar

The course is divided into 4 thematic blocks. The first block includes the following topics: 1-2 and runs during the first week of term. The second thematic block includes the topics 3-4 and runs during the following three weeks. The third block covers the topics 6-8 and develops during the following 6 weeks and the fourth block comprises the topics 9-10 and runs during the last 2 weeks of the course.
